Meet Your Inner Mentor: The Most Powerful Voice You’ve Been Ignoring

Discover the power of your Inner Mentor - the calm, wise future self within you. Includes a guided meditation and journaling prompts to help you access clarity.

What if the clearest guidance you’ll ever receive isn’t from a coach, podcast, or book but from the future version of you?

In a world overflowing with external advice, we often overlook the quiet, unwavering wisdom within. Not the critical voice that pushes and picks, but the one that calms and knows. This is the voice of your Inner Mentor and once you meet them, you’ll wonder how you ever made decisions without them.

Who Is the Inner Mentor?

While we all live with inner critics (some louder than others), we also carry within us a deep voice of truth. Popularised by Tara Mohr, author of Playing Big, your Inner Mentor is the wiser, older version of yourself. They aren’t a fantasy or a goalpost. They are a vision of the grounded, fulfilled person you’re becoming - someone who has walked your path, faced your challenges, and come out the other side with clarity, calm, and compassion.

This isn’t about manifesting fame or fortune. It’s about connecting with the part of you that already knows what really matters and what truly needs to change.

What Inner Knowing Feels Like

Glennon Doyle calls it "The Knowing" - a feeling of warm liquid gold filling her veins, creating a sense of steadiness and certainty. This inner knowing is subtle and easily ignored, often drowned out by the louder voices of the ego or inner critic. However, it persists, and its subtle nudges can be felt as persistent discomfort when we're not listening to it.

This is the same place your Inner Mentor speaks from. They aren’t reactive or anxious. They don’t yell or demand. They gently guide with clarity and calm. The more we learn to access this part of ourselves, the more anchored and self-led we become.

My Inner Mentor Cracked Me Open

For me, this voice became impossible to ignore after I got sober and began navigating my divorce. In the quiet clarity of early sobriety, I started to know not from fear, but from truth that I wasn’t meant to stay in my marriage.

I didn’t feel seen, loved, or respected the way I knew I deserved. As I rebuilt my life, created a business I’m proud of, and reclaimed a deep sense of self-worth, I realised: if the person I shared my life with couldn’t honour that, I needed to walk away.

Around that time, I stumbled upon a “Future Self” meditation online. During that meditation I met a version of me ten years ahead - strong, successful, not flashy but free. She was doing meaningful work, earning her own income, helping others, and radiating calm confidence. She loved and respected herself. And she expected the same from others.

She became my Inner Mentor.

Since then, this practice has been a touchstone in my life and work - especially as I completed Tara Mohr’s Playing Big Coaching Accreditation, where the Inner Mentor is a cornerstone. I can now access her anytime I need. I originally pictured her sitting in the chair of our newly renovated home (the one we now live in!), sipping tea, content and grounded. When I ask her for guidance, she always answers with clarity and care.

Why Inner Mentorship Matters

If you’re already in touch with your intuition, beautiful. That’s a strength worth honouring. But the Inner Mentor practice takes things further. It gives you:

  • A visual and visceral sense of your future self’s wisdom
  • A calm space to access perspective in moments of uncertainty
  • Guidance rooted not in fear or pressure but in possibility

This isn’t about getting somewhere faster. It’s about making aligned choices today, with the wisdom of who you’re becoming.

Ready to Meet Yours?

I’ve created a short Inner Mentor Visualisation Meditation to help you access this version of yourself. It’s gentle, spacious, and designed to reconnect you to your deepest knowing.

Once you’ve completed the visualisation, use the accompanying Journal Prompts Worksheet to reflect and integrate your experience. You’ll explore:

  • What your Inner Mentor looked like and how they made you feel
  • Where they live, what matters to them, and what they want you to know
  • The advice they offer you right now and how to embody it

Final Thoughts

Your Inner Mentor already exists within you. They are not waiting for you to “earn” their wisdom, they are offering it right now. All you have to do is listen. What a gift to have this inside of us, ready to access at any time.

Always remember, you don’t need to look outside yourself for the answers. You are enough. You already are what you want to become.
